In 2014 the Society was proud to be the lead organisation in the Bury St Edmunds Magna Carta 800 celebrations. In 2016 a permanent sculpture was unveiled in the Abbey Gardens to mark these celebrations.

The people of Bury St Edmunds have celebrated their link with the Magna Carta for hundreds of years with the town’s motto Shrine of the King, Cradle of the Law.
The Olle Plate is part of the mayoral collection of Bury St Edmunds and shows the town motto surrounded by the shields of the Barons who met here in 2014.
New research during the Magna Carta celebrations by Professor David Carpenter has confirmed Bury’s links with the Magna Carta in 1214.
